Dark Mode has gained significant popularity on devices like macOS, iOS, and Android in recent years. If you enjoy this feature like I do, you’ll appreciate its visual appeal and benefits, such as reduced eye strain and battery savings on mobile devices.
Benefits of Dark Mode
One of the main advantages of using Dark Mode on any device is reduced exposure to blue light. Blue light stimulates the production of serotonin and dopamine, neurotransmitters that impact mood and sleep. Essentially, blue light tricks our brain into thinking it is daytime, which can lead to mood issues and sleep pattern disruptions.
How to Enable Dark Mode on Salesforce
But how can you activate Dark Mode on your Salesforce display? Here’s how you can enable it:
- Salesforce Dark Theme
The Salesforce Dark Theme is a Google Chrome extension developed by salesforceblue.com. It allows you to toggle dark mode on or off directly in your Salesforce org. This extension supports:
- Lightning Experience
- Classic Experience
- Trailhead
- Developer Docs
- Component Reference Library
- Lightning Design System Library
- Knowledge Articles
- Discussion Forums
- Super Dark Mode
Super Dark Mode is another Google Chrome extension developed by HiSoft. Unlike the Salesforce Dark Theme, this extension enables dark mode for all pages in your browser, offering a complete blackout experience. - Night Shift on Mac
Night Shift is a feature on Apple devices that shifts the colors of your display to the warmer end of the color spectrum. Although it doesn’t reduce blue light, it provides a filtered amber version. You can learn how to enable Night Shift in your device settings. - Night Light on Windows
Night Light is the Windows equivalent of Night Shift on Mac. It also shifts your display colors to the warmer end of the spectrum. You can learn how to enable Night Light in your device settings. - Salesforce on Dark Mode
Previously, Salesforce allowed toggling dark mode on and off via their Lightning Extension for Google Chrome. However, this feature is no longer supported due to technical updates in each release. Instead, Salesforce is updating the Salesforce Lightning Design System (SLDS) and its CSS architecture, focusing on styling hooks to simplify system-wide adjustments to visual UI elements like color and typography. These enhancements may pave the way for a future night mode. The initial rollout of these changes will be in the Starter interface this summer. Kat Holmes, EVP and Chief Design Officer at Salesforce, noted that while extending CSS-only SLDS updates beyond Starter is a work in progress, the benefits and risks are still being evaluated.
Summary
Although Salesforce has disabled the dark mode option in the Salesforce Lightning Extension, you can still activate this feature using browser extensions. Alternatively, if blue light exposure is your primary concern, you can use built-in features on your operating system.
